What themes stood out most to you in the assigned readings and lecture this week? What questions did the lectures and readings raise for you? Please post your responses in the comment section below.
A theme that stood out to me was how it took a little bit of creativity to push America's economy from being dominated by agriculture, to the industrial hub it is today. Without the focus on bureaucracy, America would not have been able to industrialize as quickly as it did. I wonder if Carneige's experience in the real world at a young age suited him better than a formal education.
One of the themes that stood out to me this week was the characteristics of modern corporations that emerged due to industrialization. Specifically, the characteristic of the bureaucracy was extremely important. It allowed businesses to delegate tasks to specific groups of people so that they could get done more efficiently. This, however, led business to become very impersonal. Many workers did not actually know the people for whom they were working. Andrew Carnegie's mastery of the bureaucratic system contributed to his rise as an industrial leader in America.
The theme that stood out the most for me in our readings and lectures this week was Carnegie's group of vocational characteristics. He was not only a bureaucrat, he was an investor, technology man, and a corporate organizer. He understood how a bureaucracy ran with many moving parts and how to make all of these moving parts work together in unison to make an incredibly profitable company. He understood sales and his customers' wants and needs. In addition, he portrayed the idea that if you have any amount of extra money, you should find a growing company and invest your money into it. He knew how to decipher the difference between a company that will make the most of your money and that you should invest in, and a company who isn't going to prosper in the future. He was a corporate genius in all aspects.
The main theme that I saw was the ability for people, both American and foreign, to rise economically relative to where they came from. I was left wondering how the immigrant laborers changed the demographics of certain industrial cities.
The theme that stood out to me was Andrew Carnegie and his role in helping to embody the modern American corporation. In order to reach the immense success that he did, Carnegie needed to combine an expertise in many different skills. Carnegie mastered the management of the bureaucracy and utilized both horizontal and vertical integration. Additionally, Carnegie understood the importance of technology and investing.
A theme that stood out to me was all the different hats Andrew Carnegie wore. He was an investor, a bureaucrat, a corporate organizer, and a technology man. All these characteristics helped him in a different way to build up and strengthen his industry. All these traits helped him to become the titan he was.
One theme that stood out to me was the power of big business. I was especially interested in how easily people could buy a state legislature. I was left wondering why the south did not have a bigger role in industrial growth, despite their cheep labor and natural resources.
